 Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum

Extra cost tour--$65--includes lunch

Age of steam images.png
The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum has three roles: maintaining its roster of 23 steamers, teaching future generations these fast-disappearing job skills, and bringing America’s railroad history alive.

Jerry Jacobson retired in 2008 from the railroad industry, selling his entire 525-mile OCRS freight railroad but kept all the old equipment, especially the steamers. He acquired 34 acres of land adjacent to the OC track and constructed his Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum. He built two miles of storage tracks, a depot, store house, coal loader, wood water tank, ash pit, back shop and, the jewel of the site, a working, 18-stall brick roundhouse that surrounds a 115-foot turntable. This was the first full-sized working roundhouse built in the U.S. since 1951.

MRPS B.png

B&O West 3rd Street roundhouse was actually started by the Cleveland Terminal & Valley Railroad in 1906. At that time the CT&V was backed by, but not wholly owned by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. It was the maintenance facility for B&O trains servicing the Terminal Tower. It’s one of the oldest roundhouses operating since 1906 in this part of the country.

Today it is the home of the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. Four stalls are in the refurbished section of the roundhouse used for the restoration of a variety of railroad equipment & engine. These stalls include maintenance and wheel drop pits. The other 5 stalls are under restoration. The facility includes a wood shop, mechanical shop, meeting rooms, and general shop for large projects. A historic storage building will include the future gift shop and visitor center.

The four storage tracks connected to the operating turntable have many railcars cabooses and other equipment under different stages of restoration.
